Treasure Island

“By his own account he must have lived his life among some of the wickedest men that God ever allowed upon the sea, and the language in which he told these stories shocked our plain country people almost as much as the crimes he described.”

Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!

I had low expectations for this book (and chose it mainly based on the beautiful cover and a desire to see the origin of Long John Silver) but I was pleasantly surprised. The language took some getting used to (lots of “shiver me timbers” and “says he”) but by the midway point I was used to it, and even enjoying it. The main character, Jim Hawkins, is bound to get himself into some reckless predicament every dozen pages or so which keeps the predictable plot exciting, but there was maybe too much time spent getting to Treasure Island, and not enough time spent on the actual treasure hunt.

Overall, a light and enjoyable read with fun, over the top characters and lots of action.
