Love in the Time of Cholera
Far more upsetting than I was anticipating. The main character's life is less a testament to love than a cautionary tale of love's danger.
No matter how sweeping and beautiful the writing, there were many moments where I'd get an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach and these moments occured more often the longer the book went along.
To say this book argues that love's a sickness is an oversimplification and exaggeration, but isn't completely off base.
The writing was stunning enough to be worth the read but for those looking for an uplifting romance, I'd look elsewhere. This book is closer to Wuthering Heights than Pride and Prejudice.
