The Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

2/5 ⭐

I read this because it’s essentially a requirement for all nerds, but it took some real legwork to finally reach the end of this quest.

If you took out all scenes that were either

Eating
Setting up camp
Sleeping
Singing
Walking

This book would be 300 pages shorter and 1000% more enjoyable.

It seemed like Tolkien didn’t realize we didn’t need a lengthy description of exactly how tired each character is each night they settled into camp.

Just jump to the next morning! They’ve walked a long way and they're weary, we get it!

Okay. Enough venting.

There was a lot to enjoy about this book. The early chapters in the Shire were delightful.

The slow introduction of well known and well loved characters – from Gimli to Aragorn – was really fun.

There were a couple great lines–as you’ll see on this post.

The slow–if obvious–turning of Boromir into corruption was satisfying. And the scene where he finally confronts Frodo and tries to take the ring is the best of the book.

Overall. I’m glad I read it. I can mark it off my nerd checklist, but it will be awhile before I brave the next two of the trilogy.

Quotes:

“Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.”

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
